Thinking of adding a Furry Friend to your family? Adoption tips for finding the RIGHT canine pal!

Choosing a new family pet isn't an easy decision...there are important things to take into consideration! Here are a few tips to help you find the "right fit" for your new canine companion:
1. Boy or Girl - Decide if you want a male or female. Of course, every situation can be different, but in a lot of cases, FEMALE dogs tend to be calmer, gentler and more independent. MALE dogs have a tendency to be more energetic and affectionate towards their people.
2. Life Stage - You'll need to decide if you want a puppy or an adult dog. They BOTH have their advantages. Puppies exude a level of cuteness that is hard to deny, however, they will need quite a bit of time, attention and training. Adult dogs, on the other hand, may be housetrained, have manners and a more mellow demeanor. By adopting them post-puppy stage, you don't necessarily have the opportunity to socialize or train them from the beginning like you would a puppy.
3. Health - No matter what stage you adopt, you want to make sure your new doggo is HEALTHY! There are a few things you can look for to indicate the dog is not in poor health. The canine should have clear, bright eyes...cold, wet nose...clean coat with no fleas or ticks...clean, odor free ears...no signs of coughing or congestion and the ability to move freely and easily. It is a good idea to get a copy of any and all vet records from the place you are adopting from.
4. Behavior - You can notice the initial reaction of the pooch when you approach, but it is a good idea to spend a little time with them to get a better vibe on their personality. Don't hesitate to ask the caregivers if they have any insight into the dog's temperament. It is also good to ask if the dog is good with other animals so you can avoid any future issues with other pets!
5. Breed - Whether you get a mixed breed or a purebred, certain breeds usually carry specific characteristics that are good to know ahead of time. Some furkids will have more energy and need exercise and stimulation. Other breeds are more laid back and just want to be in your lap on the sofa. It's important to know what you want from your new pet and compare that to what they may innately be built for.
No matter which choices you decide regarding gender, life stage or breed...this is an EXCITING time for you and your family! Adding a furry family member can bring some much JOY and VALUE to your life! Hopefully you find the perfect pooch to adopt when you're ready!
